Rabinowitz Recollections

Special Commemorative Sections

Since Stanley Rabinowitz, the Henry Steele Commager Professor of Russian, Emeritus, died in January, the Amherst community has generated a veritable steppe’s worth of “Stanecdotes” about his classroom charisma, blunt charm, sustained kindness and support—plus his photographic memory. We’ve dedicated our Voices section to these recollections of Professor Rabinowitz’s from generations of his students and have added a separate page with all 80-plus hilarious memories we received in their (mostly) unedited form.

Amherst Magazine Accolades

“A Glorious Woman,” an article written by Amherst magazine senior editor Katharine Whittemore, won a 2023 gold award in the profile writing category from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Amherst magazine won a 2021 CASE silver award for best general interest magazine, and Amherst magazine contributing writer Naomi Shulman’s article “His Biggest Fear Is We’ll Go Back to Normal” won a 2021 CASE silver award in the profile writing category.
